How to Feel Like a Badass In the Gym

We are about a month and a half into 2017 now. Can you believe it?! I feel like it was just New Years! With the new year comes trying new things and setting new goals. A goal that quite a few people set is to get back to the gym. If you haven’t been to the gym before or in a long time, can be a very intimidating place. Especially if you go to a bigger gym. Now, me personally I have been a member of Anytime Fitness for at least 3 years and I love it. I love the freedom that I have to go to any Anytime gym at anytime. This was especially helpful when we moved into our new house and there wasn’t one really close to the house. This allowed me to run errands and just hit up the gym that was on the way home. The fact that you can go at any time is also convenient! *not paid to say that, I just really like the gym!
One thing to remember when starting something new, is that everyone started at some point. This is especially true in the gym. Everyone at the gym had to start as a beginner and move their way up. Believe me, when I first walked into the gym some years ago to start lifting, I had no idea what I was doing! I remember feeling self conscious, especially walking into the free weights area. I mean it was filled with these big, muscular men, how was I supposed to feel?! Now that I have been lifting for about 4 years, I don’t feel that way anymore. I feel confident and know my way around the gym. I have been asked how I got to that point many times, so I thought I would share my top 3 tips for feeling like a badass in the gym!
1. Find a good workout plan.
This may sound like it is simple but with how fast the fitness industry is growing, workout plans are popping up everywhere. I have tried multiple plans and have found that the more simple the plan is, the more I am likely to stick with it. Here are a couple of programs that I have followed that I enjoyed: Jamie Eason LiveFIT 12-Week Trainer, 12 Week Simply Shredded Women’s Plan, Katy Hearn’s Challeneges and for more of a challenge Erin Stern Elite Body 4 Week Trainer. Most of these programs have information about the workouts and nutition but it is important for you to do your own research as well. Which takes us to #2!

2. Do your research!
Research will not only help your confidence but increase your chances of success. If you are trying something new, spend some time researching on how the moves should be done and what they should feel like. Watch videos to really help you understand the moves. The website that I usually find the best videos is bodybuilding.com. Bodybuilding.com specializes in fitness and have many different reputable articles on fitness. Most of the programs I talked about in #1 have videos on the specific movement in the program on the program’s main page which makes it easier. Researching where you are getting the program is also very important. Make sure you are following a program from someone who is trained. I am not trained, I just train so that is why I don’t put together any workouts on my blog. I may share ones that I have tried and think you may enjoy, but I do not do any type of coaching.
3. Have a great playlist.
Music fuels my life. Does anyone else feel that way?! It doesn’t really matter what I am doing, music is usually playing. This is especially true at the gym! I have tried a few different things but I would have to say that my favorite (right now) is Pandora. I use my phone, connect to the gym wi-fi and then pick a playlist. Right now I rock out to either the Kid Ink station or the Nicki Minaj station. WARNING: there is a lot of harsh language in both station. Just so you are warned if you decide to check them out. There are a lot of different places you can listen to music, so my suggestion to you is find something that motivates you. Songs that push you and excite you. My best workouts are on days that my Pandora station is on point! I’ll be sharing some of the best AND worst stations on Pandora – for me anyway – next week!
Sneaky #4

I just HAD to throw this one in here. If you know me at all, you know that I love me some bright clothing. This DEFINITELY applies to workout clothes. If you think about it though, when you are wearing that favorite shirt of yours with those pants that fit just right with the comfortable flats, you feel on top of the world don’t you?! Why wouldn’t it apply the same when you are wearing that new workout outfit that you love and got a great deal on? I will be honest though, I have not purchased any “high end” workout gear from places like Athleta or Lululemon. So I do not have an opinion on those brands but I do have some great suggestions for more affordable places. Below I have some of my favorite places and some favorite items at the moment:
Old Navy

Victoria’s Secret

JC Penney

For most of these places, I wait until there are sales going on. I dont like paying full price so I wait until there is a sale for at lease 20% off. There are no favorites from TJ Maxx and Gordmans because these store are more of a first come, first serve. They have a lot of random sections in the stores and it really all depends on the day as to what you will find. There are days when I walk in and want everything and then there are others where I wonder why I even stopped. You win some you lose some I guess!
So there you have it, the top 3 (really 4) tips to help you feel like a badass in the gym!
Now some questions for you:

Favorite place to go for workout gear?

What type of music motivates you?

What helped you feel confident in the gym?
